How Free Odds Dilute the Pass and Don’t Pass House Edge

Once a point is established, the casino allows you to place an additional wager behind your Pass Line or Come bet—called Free Odds—that pays exact mathematical true odds (2 to 1 on 4/10, 3 to 2 on 5/9, and 6 to 5 on 6/8). Because the Free Odds portion has a 0.00% house edge, your expected dollar loss per shooter remains fixed at $10 × 1.41% = $0.141 on a $10 flat bet while your total action increases, shrinking the combined house edge across your total wager:

Free Odds Multiple Avg Total Units Risked (Pass) Pass + Odds Combined Edge Don’t Pass + Lay Odds Edge Expected Loss per $10 Flat Bet
0x (Flat Bet Only) 1.00x 1.414% 1.364% $0.141

Complete 36-Roll Two-Dice Distribution

Two six-sided dice produce 6 × 6 = 36 ordered outcomes. Note that (1, 2) and (2, 1) are two distinct physical outcomes (one where the red die shows 1 and the blue die shows 2, and one where the red die shows 2 and the blue die shows 1), whereas hard pairs like (1, 1) or (6, 6) can occur in only one way:

Dice Sum Ways out of 36 Single-Roll Prob Prob Before 7 (w/(w+6)) Ordered Dice Pairs (d1, d2)
2 1 / 36 2.78% 14.29% (1,1)
3 2 / 36 5.56% 25.00% (1,2), (2,1)
4 3 / 36 8.33% 33.33% (1,3), (2,2), (3,1)
5 4 / 36 11.11% 40.00% (1,4), (2,3), (3,2), (4,1)
6 5 / 36 13.89% 45.45% (1,5), (2,4), (3,3), (4,2), (5,1)

Exact Derivation of the 1.41% Pass Line & 5.38% Crapless Edge

Using the law of total probability over the come-out roll S1 ∈ (2..12):

P(Pass Wins) = P(S1 ∈ (7, 11)) + Σ P(S1 = p) × (w(p) / (w(p) + 6))

P(Pass Wins) = 8/36 + 2 × ((3/36)(3/9) + (4/36)(4/10) + (5/36)(5/11)) = 8/36 + 1/18 + 4/45 + 25/198 = 244/495 ≈ 49.2929%

Since a losing Pass Line decision occurs with probability 1 − 244/495 = 251/495 ≈ 50.7071%, the expected value per unit staked is (244 − 251) / 495 = −7/495 ≈ −1.41%.

In Crapless Craps, only 7 wins on the come-out roll (6/36), and all ten remaining totals (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12) become point numbers:

P(Crapless Pass Wins) = 6/36 + 2 × ((1/36)(1/7) + (2/36)(2/8) + (3/36)(3/9) + (4/36)(4/10) + (5/36)(5/11)) = 6557/13860 ≈ 47.3088%

That drops the player’s win probability by nearly two full percentage points and inflates the Pass Line house edge to 1 − 2 × (6557/13860) = 746/13860 = 373/6930 ≈ 5.38%.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Pass Line have a 1.41% house edge?
Out of 495 resolved Pass Line decisions, you win 244 times (49.29%) and lose 251 times (50.71%). Specifically, you win 8/36 on the come-out roll (7 or 11), plus 2*(3/36)*(3/9) on 4 & 10, plus 2*(4/36)*(4/10) on 5 & 9, plus 2*(5/36)*(5/11) on 6 & 8, which sums to 244/495. The net expected value is (244 − 251) / 495 = −7/495 = −1.41%.
Why does Don’t Pass bar the 12 on the come-out roll?
If Don’t Pass won on all three craps numbers (2, 3, and 12), the dark-side player would have a +1.41% advantage over the casino! Making 12 a push (“Bar 12”) removes 1/36 of the come-out wins and shifts the balance to a 1.36% house edge per come-out roll (or 1.40% per non-pushed decision). Some tables “Bar 2” instead, which is mathematically identical because both 2 and 12 have 1 way out of 36.
What is the difference between house edge per bet and house edge per roll?
A one-roll proposition like Any Seven (16.67%) resolves on every throw of the dice. A Pass Line bet (1.41%) takes an average of 3.38 rolls to resolve, so its cost per individual roll of the dice is only 0.42%. That is why center-table one-roll bets drain a bankroll 30 to 40 times faster per hour than line bets.
Should I Place or Buy the 4 and 10?
Always Buy the 4 and 10 rather than Place them. Placing 4 or 10 pays 9 to 5 against true 2-to-1 odds, carrying a 6.67% house edge. Buying 4 or 10 pays true 2-to-1 odds minus a 5% commission ($1 vig per $20 bet), cutting the house edge to 4.76% if the vig is charged upfront—or 1.67% at casinos that charge the vig only when the bet wins.
