About Virginia scratchers

Virginia sells Scratchers in price points from $1 to $50, and the Virginia Lottery publishes, for every game, how many winning tickets it started with, how many are still unclaimed, and the overall odds of winning. Those come from valottery.com. Virginia does not publish the odds of each individual prize level, so the tier odds here are derived by spreading its overall figure across the prize table; across all 95 game pages that lands within about a tenth of the top-prize odds Virginia publishes for itself. The method is set out on our methodology page.

Two things are worth knowing about what is listed here. Virginia runs free promotional games — "A Win For Education" and a digital promotional ticket — which appear in its own feed with no ticket price at all. They are not on this page: every number we publish is per dollar spent, and a free game has no payout to report. Virginia also publishes no end-of-sale or last-claim date for any game; the only signal it gives is a "closing soon" flag, so games marked here as no longer on sale are the ones Virginia has flagged, without a date attached.

Where to buy: licensed retailers across Virginia, typically convenience stores, grocery stores and gas stations. Winning Scratchers must be entered into Virginia Lottery Rewards before a prize is claimed, which is a step most states do not have. Larger prizes are claimed at a Virginia Lottery customer service centre or by mail; the back of the ticket carries the exact instructions.

Tax: Virginia withholds 4% state tax and 24% federal on prizes over $5,000. Withholding is not the same as what you finally owe, which depends on your total income for the year. For anything large enough to change your tax bracket, talk to an accountant before you claim.

A word on what these numbers can and cannot do. Scratcher outcomes are fixed when the tickets are printed; nothing you read here changes the ticket in your hand. What the data does tell you is which games currently return more of each dollar to players and which still have their big prizes outstanding. Over many tickets that is a real difference in how much you lose. It is never an edge: every Virginia Scratcher returns less than it costs, by design.
