About South Carolina scratch-offs
South Carolina sells scratch-offs in price points from $1 to $20, and the South Carolina Education Lottery publishes, for every game, how many prizes it started with and how many are still unclaimed. It updates those figures daily at sceducationlottery.com, and stamps each game page with the hour it was last refreshed. One thing South Carolina does not publish is the odds of each individual prize level: its per-tier odds page renders nothing at all, and warns that its figures would be counted on tickets ordered while the prize table is counted on tickets delivered. So the tier odds here are derived by spreading South Carolina's own overall odds across the prize table, the same way we handle Michigan — the method, and how close it lands, are set out on our methodology page.
Where to buy: licensed retailers across South Carolina, typically convenience stores, grocery stores and gas stations. New games usually arrive on the first Tuesday of the month. Retailers can pay prizes up to and including $500. Anything above that goes by mail or to the Columbia Claims Center — the only claims centre in the state, open 8:30am to 5pm on weekdays, and it asks you to arrive by 4pm. Prizes over $100,000 must be claimed there in person. Sign the back of the ticket before you present it, and note the deadline: once a game officially ends you have 90 days to redeem, which is shorter than most states allow.
Tax: South Carolina withholds 6.4% state tax and 24% federal on prizes over $5,000. Withholding is not the same as what you finally owe, which depends on your total income for the year. For anything large enough to change your tax bracket, talk to an accountant before you claim.
