No payout figure, on purpose. Iowa publishes only the prizes of $50 and up for each game, with how many have been claimed and how many are left. A payout, an expected value or the odds today each need every prize level and how many were printed, so for Iowa we show exactly what its lottery publishes and compute nothing from it. A figure built from part of a table would be wrong, not rough: it is how one state's partial table produced games that appeared to pay back more than they cost. How we treat partial prize tables.

Why there is no payout figure for Iowa

Every other state on this site is ranked by current payout: how much of each dollar still in a game comes back as prizes. That figure needs every prize level and how many of each were printed. Iowa publishes only the prizes of $50 and up for each game, with how many have been claimed and how many are left. So the figure cannot be computed, and an estimate would not be a rough version of the truth — it would be wrong in a direction nobody could see.

What Iowa does publish answers the question most people bring to this page: which games still have their top prizes, and how many. Those counts are shown here as published, every day, with the date the Lottery last updated them. The overall odds on each game are Iowa's own printed figure, not ours. The method is on our methodology page.

About Iowa scratch games

Iowa sells scratch games in price points from $1 to $50, and the Iowa Lottery publishes, in one table on ialottery.com, every prize of $50 and up in each game it sells, with how many have been claimed and how many are still unclaimed, through the end of a stated day. Each game's own page adds its start date, its overall odds and the odds of every prize level. Below $50 it publishes no counts at all, and those small prizes are most of a game's winning tickets.

That is why Iowa's pages here carry no payout, expected value or current odds: each needs every prize level, and Iowa publishes counts for the upper ones only. What its figures do answer exactly is how much of each game's big prizes is still out there. Claimed plus unclaimed is every prize of that level the game has had, so games here are ordered by the share of their top prizes still unclaimed, then by Iowa's overall odds. A long-running game that has been reprinted carries the prizes of every printing: Iowa's $30,000 Crossword lists 151 of its top prize in all.

The counts lag a day or two behind: Iowa dates them "through end of day" on a given date, shown at the top of each page here. A prize is counted as claimed when the Lottery processes the claim, not when a winning ticket is sold.

Where to buy: licensed Iowa Lottery retailers across the state. Small prizes can be cashed at retailers; larger ones are claimed from the Lottery, and the back of the ticket gives the exact limits.

Tax: Iowa withholds 5% state income tax and 24% federal on prizes over $5,000; the lottery tax calculator has the rates. Withholding is not the same as what you finally owe. For anything large enough to change your tax bracket, talk to an accountant before you claim.

Scratch-game outcomes are fixed when the tickets are printed; nothing you read here changes the ticket in your hand. A top prize still being unclaimed says nothing about your chance of winning it. Play for entertainment, with money you can afford to lose.

Iowa scratch games: common questions

Which Iowa scratch games still have top prizes left?
50 of the 50 games Iowa lists, as of October 14, 2026. First in our order (games with a top prize still unclaimed first, by the share of their top prizes still unclaimed, then by the better overall odds): $300,000 Cashword ($30, 14 of 14 $300,000 top prizes left); Holiday Cash ($10, 7 of 7 $100,000 top prizes left); 100X The Cash ($20, 8 of 8 $250,000 top prizes left).
What is the biggest top prize still unclaimed in Iowa?
$500,000, on 500X ($50), with 5 still unclaimed as of October 14, 2026.
How many Iowa scratch games have no top prize left?
None, as of October 14, 2026: every game Iowa lists still has at least one top prize unclaimed.
Why is there no payout or expected value for Iowa?
Iowa publishes only the prizes of $50 and up for each game, with how many have been claimed and how many are left. A payout needs every prize level and how many were printed; without them any figure would be invented, so we publish none and show what the lottery publishes instead.
Which Iowa scratch game has the best overall odds?
$300,000 Cashword ($30), at 1 in 2.28 as Iowa prints them. Overall odds count every prize, most of them small, and are fixed when the game is printed.
How often is this updated?
We read Iowa's official prize figures every day; the last read was October 14, 2026. Iowa itself last updated its counts on October 12, 2026. Claims reach the counts only when the lottery processes them, so a prize can be won and not yet shown as claimed.
