How to play Deuces Wild
Each round of Deuces Wild is dealt from a single 52-card deck in which the four Twos (2♠, 2♥, 2♦ and 2♣) act as wild cards. After selecting a stake from 1 to 5 coins and clicking Deal, you receive five initial cards. You mark the cards you want to keep by clicking on them or pressing number keys 1 through 5, then click Draw to replace all unheld cards from the 47 cards remaining in the stub. The machine automatically assigns every deuce in your final five-card hand the rank and suit that produces the highest possible payout.
Waging all 5 coins per round is vital in Deuces Wild because the Natural Royal Flush (a royal flush made without any wild Two) jumps from 250 credits per coin staked on 1-to-4-coin bets up to 4,000 coins (800 for 1) on a 5-coin bet. On Full Pay Deuces Wild, betting 1 to 4 coins drops the theoretical return from 100.76% down to 99.12%, turning a positive-expectation schedule into a house-edge game before a single card is drawn.
Because four wild cards make pairs and two-pair hands far easier to hit than in standard draw poker, Deuces Wild removes both High Pair and Two Pair from the payout board entirely. The bottom rung on the ladder is Three of a Kind, which returns 1 coin per coin wagered (5 coins on a max bet). In exchange for losing two-pair payouts, the board adds three top-heavy rows that only exist in wild-card games: Five of a Kind (15 for 1 on Full Pay), Wild Royal Flush (25 for 1) and Four Deuces (200 for 1, or 1,000 coins on a 5-coin wager).
The four wild Twos completely reshape how you read a deal. Almost 28% of all five-card deals contain at least one deuce, and every single deuce you receive is held 100% of the time without exception. Strategy in Deuces Wild therefore splits into five separate sub-games depending on whether the initial deal gives you zero, one, two, three or all four deuces.

Played with optimal hold decisions at 5 coins per hand, Full Pay Deuces Wild returns 100.76% (100.7620% to four decimal places), making it one of the very few video poker schedules with a player edge before casino rebates. Most casino floors today spread tighter variants such as Not So Ugly Ducks (16/10/4/4/3, returning 99.73%) or Illinois Deuces (15/9/4/4, returning 98.91%), where trimming Four of a Kind from 5 coins to 4 coins removes nearly a full percentage point of return. Deuces Wild strategy in short
Because you never discard a deuce, the first step on every hand is simply counting how many Twos appear in your five dealt cards. With four deuces your 1,000-coin payout is already locked in; with three deuces you only stand pat on a Wild Royal Flush or Five of a Kind and otherwise hold just the three deuces to draw two cards toward the fourth Two or a wild royal.
The ranked summary below condenses the Full Pay Deuces Wild strategy across hands with two, one or zero deuces into twelve priority rules:
- Four deuces, or any dealt Natural Royal Flush: hold all five cards. With four deuces, holding the fifth card or discarding it pays the same 200-for-1 Four Deuces prize.
- Three deuces with a Wild Royal Flush or Five of a Kind: stand pat on all five cards; with any other three-deuce hand (including a wild straight flush or four of a kind), hold only the three deuces and draw two cards.
- Two deuces with a Wild Royal Flush, Five of a Kind, Straight Flush or Four of a Kind: hold the made hand (four cards on Four of a Kind so you draw one card toward Five of a Kind).
- Two deuces with four cards to a Wild Royal Flush: hold the two deuces plus the two suited royal cards; otherwise with two deuces, hold only the two deuces and discard everything else.
- One deuce with any pat hand from Four of a Kind up to a Wild Royal Flush, or with a Full House, Flush or Straight: stand pat on five-card hands, and on Four of a Kind hold the deuce plus the three matching natural cards.
- One deuce with four cards to a Wild Royal Flush or four cards to a Straight Flush: hold the four cards and draw one.
- One deuce with Three of a Kind (a natural pair plus the deuce): hold the deuce and the pair, discarding the two odd cards to draw toward Four of a Kind, Full House or Five of a Kind.
- One deuce with no pair and no four-card royal or straight-flush draw: hold the single deuce (or the deuce with two suited royal cards) and draw three or four new cards. Never hold two pair when one of the cards is a deuce.
- Zero deuces with four cards to a Natural Royal Flush: hold the four suited royal cards, breaking a pat flush or straight to chase the 800-for-1 top prize.
- Zero deuces with any made hand (Three of a Kind, Straight, Flush, Full House, Four of a Kind or Straight Flush): hold the made hand, keeping only the three matching cards on Three of a Kind.
- Zero deuces with four to a Straight Flush, three to a Natural Royal Flush, or a natural pair: hold four to a straight flush first, then three to a natural royal, then a single pair (if dealt two natural pairs with no deuce, hold only one pair because Two Pair pays nothing).
- Zero deuces with no pair: hold four to a flush, four to an outside straight, three to a straight flush or two suited royal cards; with none of those draws, discard all five cards and draw five fresh ones (unlike Jacks or Better, never hold a single lone high card in Deuces Wild).
Two habits trip up players moving over from Jacks or Better. First, when you hold zero deuces and no pair or suited draw, you never keep a single Ace, King, Queen or Jack by itself; because high pairs do not pay, drawing five fresh cards to hunt for wild Twos has a higher return (0.3596 units) than holding one high card. Second, when dealt two natural pairs without a deuce (such as Jacks and Fours), you must throw one pair away and hold only a single two-card pair, because Full House (3 for 1) pays less than Four of a Kind (5 for 1) and drawing three cards gives you shots at catching wild deuces for Four of a Kind or Five of a Kind.
Three solved hands on Full Pay Deuces Wild
Every example below is verified against the packed optimal-play lookup table for Full Pay Deuces Wild (paytable dw_1), with returns expressed per 1-coin unit wagered:
- Dealt 2♠ 8♥ 8♦ K♣ 4♥: hold 2♠ 8♥ 8♦ (one deuce with a natural pair (wild Three of a Kind), expected value 2.0176 units). The wild Two combines with the pair of Eights to lock in at least Three of a Kind (1 unit), and drawing two cards gives you nine outs to Four of a Kind (5 units), three outs to another deuce or third Eight, and full-house combinations. Holding only the deuce drops expected value to 1.0315 units.
- Dealt 2♠ 2♦ 9♥ 9♣ K♠: hold 2♠ 2♦ 9♥ 9♣ (two deuces with a natural pair (wild Four of a Kind), expected value 5.8511 units). Two deuces plus a pair of Nines already forms Four of a Kind (5 units), and discarding the King gives you 4 chances in 47 (the two remaining Nines and the two remaining Twos) to improve to Five of a Kind (15 units) or Four Deuces (200 units). Tossing the pair to hold only the two deuces would drop the hand's value to 4.5579 units.
- Dealt 10♦ J♦ Q♦ K♦ 7♠: hold 10♦ J♦ Q♦ K♦ (zero deuces, four to a Natural Royal Flush, expected value 19.8511 units). The Ace of diamonds completes the 800-for-1 Natural Royal Flush, while any of the four Twos completes a 25-for-1 Wild Royal Flush. That gives you five royal outs in 47 cards on top of straight, flush and three-of-a-kind redraws.

Frequently asked questions
- Why do I throw away one pair when dealt two pair with no deuces?
- In Deuces Wild, Two Pair pays zero and a Full House pays only 3 for 1, whereas Four of a Kind pays 5 for 1 and Five of a Kind pays 15 for 1. Holding just one pair and drawing three cards lets you catch wild Twos to make Four of a Kind, Five of a Kind or Four Deuces, yielding a higher expected value than drawing one card to a 3-for-1 Full House.
- What is the difference between a Natural Royal Flush and a Wild Royal Flush?
- A Natural Royal Flush is Ten, Jack, Queen, King and Ace of the same suit with zero Twos in the hand, paying 4,000 coins on a 5-coin bet (800 for 1). A Wild Royal Flush uses one, two or three deuces to substitute for missing royal cards and pays 125 coins on a 5-coin bet (25 for 1) on the Full Pay schedule.
- Should I ever discard a deuce in Deuces Wild?
- Never. Even if you hold four cards to a Natural Royal Flush alongside one deuce (making a pat Wild Royal Flush worth 25 for 1), keeping the deuce with the royal cards has a higher expected return than throwing the deuce away. Every wild Two dealt to you stays held on 100% of hands.
- Why does Full Pay Deuces Wild return more than 100%?
- The 15/9/5/3 payout schedule was designed in the early days of Las Vegas video poker before exact computer solves were widely shared. When a player follows computer-perfect strategy on a 5-coin bet, the four-deuce (200 for 1) and natural-royal (800 for 1) jackpots push the total return to 100.7620%, giving a skilled player a 0.76% mathematical edge.
- Does this Deuces Wild game require an account or real money?
- No. You play with free browser credits that can be reset at any time, with no registration and no download. Any real-money casino promotions on the page are confined to separate, labelled ad sections below the machine.
