Background: New game or old game: which is the better buy?

What to expect from a new game

A game on its launch day has every prize unclaimed, so the odds and payout you see are the printed ones. They start moving the moment prizes are claimed: the payout drifts down as top prizes are hit and up as ordinary tickets are sold without hitting them. That means a new release is neither a bargain nor a trap on its own; it is simply a game with no history yet. What a new game does offer is certainty. The top prizes are definitely still available, which is not true of a game that has been on shelves for a year.

Frequently asked questions

How many new South Dakota scratch games launched recently?
4 in the last 90 days, 0 of them in the last 30, as of October 14, 2026.
Are new scratchers better than older ones?
Not automatically. A brand-new game has every prize unclaimed, so its odds match the printed values, but an older game whose top prizes are still out there and whose tickets are mostly sold can carry a higher current payout. Compare on the South Dakota hub rather than assuming.
What should I check before buying a new game?
The printed overall odds, the payout, and whether the price tier is one you would normally buy. On a new game these are the launch numbers; nothing has moved yet.
How quickly do you list new games?
Within hours of the South Dakota Lottery publishing them: we re-read its official prize data four times a day.
