Last drawing, October 6, 2026:
The short version
Nobody matched all six numbers on October 6, 2026, so the jackpot rolls to $364 million for Friday's drawing. At this jackpot a $5 ticket is worth about $1.29 before tax.
Mega Millions jackpot after taxes, state by state
For a single winner of $364 million, in each of the 45 states and DC that sell Mega Millions, taking the cash. After tax is what is left once the whole federal bill is paid at filing (2026 brackets, single filer — a jackpot sits almost entirely in the 37% bracket) and the state's withholding; the cheque is the cash value less the 24% federal and the state's withholding, which is what is paid out before the rest of the federal bill falls due. The annuity columns tax each of the 30 payments in its own year.

State figures are each state's withholding rate on a resident's prize, last checked September 12, 2026: an estimate of the final state bill, not the bill itself. New York City adds 3.876% and Yonkers 1.477% for their residents. Buying in one state and living in another can add your home state's tax. The tax calculator takes any amount, filing status and rate.

When could it reach $500 million, $700 million or $1 billion?
If nobody wins, and the jackpot grows the way past Mega Millions runs grew from the same level — a median of 4.9% a drawing between $400 million and $600 million, measured from 106 drawings since October 3, 2025 — it would pass:
| Jackpot | First drawing at or above it | Drawings after Oct 9 | Chance the run lasts that long |
|---|---|---|---|
| $500 million | Friday, October 30, 2026 | 6 | 36% |
| $700 million | Tuesday, November 24, 2026 | 13 | 5% |
| $1 billion | Friday, December 18, 2026 | 20 | under 1% |
A projection, not a forecast: the operator sets each new estimate from actual sales, and weekend drawings add more than midweek ones. The last column is the chance that nobody wins any of the drawings before that one, so that the jackpot actually gets there, from the number of tickets Mega Millions sells at each jackpot size (fitted to its own published figures). Most runs end before the big numbers.
What a ticket is worth at $364 million
A $5 ticket's share of the jackpot is the jackpot times the odds, cut three ways: to the cash value (40% of the headline), by the chance someone else matches the same numbers (about 41 million tickets are in play at this size, so a winner keeps 93% of the prize on average), and by tax. Before tax it comes to $0.47, plus $0.82 from the fixed prizes: $1.29 in all, 26 cents on the dollar. Every prize tier and its odds.
Frequently asked questions
- How much is the Mega Millions jackpot for the next drawing?
- $364 million for Friday, October 9, 2026, drawn at 11:00 pm ET. That is the advertised annuity; the cash value is $147.3 million. The figure is the operator's estimate as published by megamillions.com and the California Lottery, which agree, and it can be revised up before the draw as sales come in.
- What is the cash value of the Mega Millions jackpot?
- $147.3 million, as the lottery publishes it — 40% of the advertised $364 million. The advertised figure is the total of a 30-year annuity whose payments rise 5% a year; the cash value is the money that would buy that annuity today. Almost every jackpot winner takes the cash.
- How much would a Mega Millions winner take home after taxes?
- A single winner taking the cash keeps about $93 million in a state with no lottery tax, once the full federal bill is paid at filing, and about $77 million in New York, the highest-withholding state that sells Mega Millions. The cheque itself is larger, because only 24% federal is withheld up front and the rest — about 13 percentage points more — is due with the tax return. Every state is in the table above.
- Which states do not tax Mega Millions winnings?
- Of the 45 states and DC that sell Mega Millions, 9 withhold no state tax on a prize: California, Delaware, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming. Federal tax applies everywhere. Where you live can matter as well as where you bought the ticket, if they differ.
- Is a Mega Millions ticket worth buying at $364 million?
- Not as a bet. At this jackpot a $5 ticket is worth about $1.29 before tax — 26 cents on the dollar — once the cash discount and the 7% chance of sharing the prize are counted. The game page has the whole curve.
- When is the next Mega Millions drawing?
- Mega Millions is drawn every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 pm ET. The next three drawings: Friday October 9, 2026; Tuesday October 13, 2026; Friday October 16, 2026. Results go up on the game page as soon as the lotteries publish them.
